Make a hearty, upgraded version of classic Sloppy Joes served on thick, buttery Texas Toast topped with melted cheese. This is a quick, comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 slices Texas Toast (frozen or fresh)
  • 4 slices cheddar or American cheese
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting)

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables soften, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, and garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook uncovered for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
  5. While the meat simmers, prepare the Texas Toast. Spread a thin layer of butter on one side of each slice.
  6. Toast the bread butter-side down in a separate skillet or on a griddle over medium heat until golden brown and crisp, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  7. Place four slices of the toasted Texas Toast on a baking sheet. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over these four slices.
  8. Top each portion with one slice of cheese.
  9. Place the baking sheet under a preheated broiler for 1-2 minutes, watching closely, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  10. Top with the remaining four slices of toast to make sandwiches. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, brush the Texas Toast with garlic butter before toasting.
  • If you prefer a saucier filling, reduce the simmering time slightly.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or ground pork for the ground beef.
