Make this easy Tater Tot Casserole your next family favorite dinner. This recipe delivers a creamy, savory ground beef base topped with perfectly crispy, golden tater tots. It is a simple, satisfying comfort food casserole perfect for weeknights or feeding a crowd.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 (15 ounce) can green beans, drained
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1 (32 ounce) bag frozen tater tots

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the ground beef and chopped onion in a large skillet over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onion is soft. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir the garlic powder, salt, and pepper into the cooked beef mixture.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth.
  5. Add the soup mixture and the drained green beans to the skillet with the beef. Stir everything together well.
  6. Spread half of the shredded cheddar cheese over the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  7. Pour the beef and soup mixture evenly over the cheese layer in the baking dish.
  8. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the beef mixture. Do not overlap them too much for best crisping.
  9. Bake for 25 minutes.
  10. Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar cheese over the tater tots.
  11. Return the casserole to the oven and bake for another 5 to 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
  12. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before you serve it.

Notes

  • For a Cowboy Casserole variation, add 1 cup of drained canned corn to the beef mixture before spreading it in the dish.
  • If you want an extra crispy topping, bake the tots uncovered for the first 25 minutes, then add the cheese and bake until melted.
  • You can substitute cream of chicken soup for cream of mushroom soup if you prefer a different flavor base.
