A recipe for making flaky pastries filled with sweet cream cheese and topped with strawberry preserves.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (14.1 ounces) frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup strawberry preserves or jam
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for egg wash)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon milk or water (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheets onto a lightly floured surface. Cut each sheet into 9 equal squares.
  3. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, egg yolk, vanilla extract, and salt until the mixture is smooth.
  4. Place about 1 tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture in the center of each pastry square.
  5. Lightly score a border around the cream cheese mound, being careful not to cut all the way through the pastry. This helps the edges puff up.
  6. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of strawberry preserves over the cream cheese filling on each square.
  7. In a small bowl, whisk together the beaten egg and 2 tablespoons of milk to create an egg wash. Brush the edges of the pastry squares with the egg wash.
  8. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  9. While the danishes cool slightly, whisk together the powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon of milk or water to create a thin glaze.
  10. Drizzle the glaze over the warm danishes before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flaky pastry, keep the puff pastry cold until you are ready to cut and fill the squares.
  • If you prefer a brighter strawberry flavor, use fresh, sliced strawberries mixed with a little sugar instead of preserves.
  • You can use store-bought Danish dough if you prefer not to use puff pastry, adjusting baking time as needed.
