Make a fresh, spicy mango salsa using habanero peppers for significant heat. This recipe balances sweet mango with lime juice and fresh herbs.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large ripe mangoes, diced
  • 1/2 red onion, finely diced
  • 1 habanero pepper, seeded and minced (use gloves)
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice (about 2 limes)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

Instructions

  1. Prepare the mangoes by peeling and dicing them into small, uniform pieces. Place the diced mango in a medium bowl.
  2. Finely dice the red onion. Put on gloves before handling the habanero pepper. Carefully slice the pepper in half, remove the seeds and white membrane, and mince the flesh very finely. Add the onion, minced habanero, and chopped cilantro to the bowl with the mango.
  3. Pour the fresh lime juice over the mixture.
  4. Add the salt and ground cumin.
  5. Gently fold all ingredients together until they are evenly combined. Avoid over-mixing to keep the mango pieces intact.
  6. Taste the salsa and adjust seasoning if needed, adding more lime juice for brightness or salt for flavor.
  7. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Notes

  • For a milder heat, substitute the habanero with one jalapeƱo pepper, keeping the seeds in for more spice.
  • If you prefer a smoother texture, pulse the ingredients lightly in a food processor, but do not puree.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Serve this salsa with grilled fish tacos, pork chops, or plain tortilla chips.
