- 3 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and quartered
- 1/2 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Optional Sweet Add-in: 2 tablespoons brown sugar or maple syrup
- Optional Savory Add-in: 1 clove roasted garlic or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Place the peeled and quartered sweet potatoes in a large pot. Cover them with cold water.
- Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes well in a colander. Return the drained potatoes to the hot, empty pot.
- Add the butter, milk, salt, and pepper.
- Mash the potatoes using a potato masher until they reach your desired consistency. For extra creaminess, use an electric mixer on low speed briefly.
- If using sweet add-ins, stir in the brown sugar or maple syrup now. If using savory add-ins, stir in the roasted garlic or thyme.
- Taste and adjust seasoning before serving warm.
Notes
- For the creamiest texture, warm the milk and butter slightly before adding them to the potatoes.
- If you prefer a fluffier mash, let the drained potatoes steam dry in the hot pot for 5 minutes before mashing.
- To make this a savory dish, substitute the brown sugar with a pinch of cayenne pepper and a tablespoon of chopped fresh chives.
