Make a traditional Southern peach cobbler that tastes homemade but requires very little effort. This recipe uses fresh peaches for the best flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups fresh peaches, sliced (about 8 medium)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the sliced peaches, 1 cup sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and water. Cook over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the peaches soften slightly and the juices thicken. Pour the peach mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Stir in the milk until just combined to form a thick batter. Do not overmix.
  6. Drop spoonfuls of the batter evenly over the top of the hot peaches in the baking dish. It does not need to cover the fruit completely.
  7. Brush the tops of the batter mounds lightly with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  8. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the peach filling is bubbly.
  9. Let the cobbler cool for at least 15 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

  • Serve this warm cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a classic comfort dessert experience.
  • If you use canned peaches, drain them well and reduce the added water to 2 tablespoons.
  • For a richer topping flavor, substitute buttermilk for regular milk.
