- 4 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- 4 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 tsp baking powder
- Pinch of salt
- 3 Tbsp milk
- 1 Tbsp vegetable oil
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 square (about 1/2 oz) dark chocolate, room temperature
- In a microwave-safe mug (about 10-12 oz), whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until combined.
- Add the milk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix well until the batter is smooth and no lumps remain. Do not overmix.
- Gently push the square of dark chocolate into the center of the batter. Do not stir it in; let it sit in the middle.
- Microwave on high power for 60 to 75 seconds. Cooking time varies by microwave wattage. Start with 60 seconds.
- The cake is done when the edges look set but the center still looks slightly wet. If it looks completely dry, you have overcooked it.
- Let the cake cool in the mug for 1 minute before eating directly from the mug.
Notes
- For a molten center, do not cook past the point where the top is just set. The center chocolate piece melts during cooking.
- If your cake is dry, reduce the cooking time by 5-10 seconds next time.
- Use a room temperature chocolate piece for the best melt.
