You can create this decadent, layered chocolate dessert without turning on your oven. This easy make-ahead chocolate cake uses fudgy brownies, creamy filling, and sets perfectly in the fridge, making it ideal for potlucks or satisfying a rich chocolate craving.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (18.25 ounce) box fudge brownie mix (plus ingredients listed on box for baking)
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup cold milk
  • 1 (3.9 ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 cups whipped topping, thawed (like Cool Whip)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare and bake the brownies according to the package directions. Let them cool completely, then cut them into uniform squares or rectangles.
  2. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the cold milk and instant chocolate pudding mix for about two minutes until it begins to thicken. Let it stand for five minutes.
  4. Gently fold half of the whipped topping into the thickened chocolate pudding mixture until just combined.
  5. In a 9×13 inch baking dish, arrange a single layer of the cooled brownie pieces to cover the bottom completely.
  6. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the layer of brownies.
  7. Top the cream cheese layer with the chocolate pudding mixture, spreading it carefully to cover the cream cheese layer.
  8. Gently spread the remaining half of the whipped topping over the pudding layer.
  9. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top layer.
  10. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the layers to set firmly.
  11. When ready to serve this rich creamy dessert recipe, cut into squares and enjoy the chilled brownie layer dessert.

Notes

  • For the fudgiest texture, slightly underbake your brownies before cooling and cutting them.
  • You can substitute store-bought, pre-made brownies to save time on assembly.
  • If you want a stronger chocolate flavor, use chocolate milk instead of plain milk when making the pudding layer.
