Ingredients
Scale
8 cups stale bread cubes (Challah or French bread work best)
4 large eggs
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
3 medium apples (like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and diced
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
Butter for greasing the dish
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly butter a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the diced apples and raisins (if using) over the bread.
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth.
Whisk in the milk, heavy cream, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and nutmeg until the custard mixture is fully combined.
Slowly pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread and apples in the baking dish. Gently press the bread down to help it soak up the liquid.
Let the bread pudding soak for at least 20 minutes, or cover and refrigerate for up to 4 hours (or overnight for make ahead convenience).
Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted near the center comes out mostly clean. The center should be set.
Let the Best Bread Pudding Dessert cool slightly before serving warm. Serve plain or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Notes
For an Apple Pie Bread Pudding flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon of apple pie spice to the custard mixture.
If you want a Caramel Apple Bread Pudding, prepare a simple caramel sauce separately and drizzle it over the top just before serving.
Using slightly stale bread gives the pudding a better texture, preventing it from becoming too mushy.
