Make crispy, satisfying onion rings in your air fryer with a simple breading process that avoids deep frying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cups Panko breadcrumbs
  • Cooking spray (oil-based)

Instructions

  1. Slice the onions into 1/4-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set aside.
  2. Set up a standard breading station with three shallow dishes.
  3. In the first dish, combine the flour, salt, pepper, and paprika. Mix well.
  4. In the second dish, whisk together the eggs and milk.
  5. In the third dish, place the Panko breadcrumbs.
  6. Take a batch of onion rings and dredge them thoroughly in the flour mixture, shaking off excess.
  7. Dip the floured rings into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off.
  8. Press the rings firmly into the Panko breadcrumbs until fully coated. Place the coated rings on a plate.
  9. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
  10. Arrange the coated onion rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd the basket; work in batches.
  11. Spray the tops of the onion rings lightly with cooking spray.
  12. Air fry at 380F (195C) for 10 to 12 minutes, flipping the rings halfway through the cooking time.
  13. Spray the second side lightly with cooking spray after flipping.
  14. Remove when golden brown and crispy. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use yellow or Vidalia onions for the best flavor and structure.
  • For extra crispiness, chill the breaded rings for 15 minutes before air frying.
  • If you need a gluten-free option, substitute the flour with gluten-free all-purpose flour and use gluten-free breadcrumbs.
